Paintstorm Studio — Project: Patterned Still Life

🎨 Paintstorm 🧵 Pattern 🍐 Still Life

Bring pattern and texture into a traditional still life. We’ll design a motif, tile it, then wrap it onto ceramics or cloth using light-aware layers.

Goal: A finished still life with tasteful patterning integrated into the scene — not slapped on like a sticker.

Project plan

Same backbone as basic still life — with a pattern branch inserted after base colors.

Subject & layout

Pick a vase or bowl to receive the pattern, plus two fruits. Use a neutral cloth or wall so the motif has room to shine.

<!-- Canvas suggestion (escaped) -->
Size: 3000 × 2000 px @ 300 DPI
Color space: sRGB
Background: mid-neutral gray

Motif direction

Choose a simple seed: a leaf, petal, or geometric wedge. Build a radial rosette, then try kaleidoscope for variants.

<!-- Motif notes -->
Arms: 6–8 (start)
Offset: 0–10°
Mirror per arm: optional

Step-by-step

Design & tile

Create a 512×512 tile, test with canvas offset, fix seams, and export as PNG.

<!-- Tiling checklist -->
Canvas: 512 × 512
Offset: 256 px both axes
Paint across seams, re-test
Export: PNG (transparent if needed)

Wrap on form

Paste the tile onto a new layer and transform to match curvature. Use gentle warps; avoid stretching motifs near edges.

<!-- Placement recipe -->
1) Paste tile on layer
2) Transform: warp/mesh to fit
3) Shadows: Multiply (clipped)
4) Highlights: Overlay (clipped)

Integrate with light

Glaze shadows and highlights so the pattern inherits the object’s light. Add micro-texture last to marry everything.

<!-- Integration notes -->
Contact shadow: darkest at touch
Bounce light: faint, color-tinted
Texture pass: low depth, low flow

Demos & visual aids

Pattern Layer Shadow Sorry, your browser does not support inline SVG.
Pattern layer sits on form; Multiply/Overlay layers integrate it with lighting.

Interactive — tile painter

Draw a small motif; the canvas repeats it as a tile preview. Adjust scale and rotation.

Export & review

Export checklist

<!-- Export steps -->
1) Save master: patterned_still_life_master.psd
2) Duplicate & flatten for export
3) Convert to sRGB (if needed)
4) PNG (web) / TIFF (print)

Critique prompts

  • Does the pattern serve the composition or compete with it?
  • Are values still readable from a distance (squint test)?
  • Does the pattern wrap believably around curves?
