Paintstorm Studio — Symmetry & Kaleidoscope

🎨 Paintstorm 🪩 Kaleidoscope 🪞 Symmetry

Design motifs that look intricate with minimal effort. Think of symmetry as a choir — your single note becomes a chorus.

Goal: Use mirror, radial, and kaleidoscope modes to create decorative elements (florals, tiles, borders) for patterned still lifes.

Symmetry modes in a nutshell

Paintstorm provides mirror (one axis), dual mirror (two axes), radial symmetry (N arms), and kaleidoscope (radial + reflection). Each mode multiplies your stroke for intricate designs with consistent rhythm.

Pick a mode based on the visual rhythm you want.

Artist-first setup

Start with a simple petal shape in radial symmetry. Add kaleidoscope only if you need more facets — complexity grows fast, like adding mirrors in a small room.

<!-- Setup (escaped) -->
Mode: Radial
Arms: 6–8
Offset: 0–10°
Stabilizer: Medium
Texture: Subtle (Depth 15–25%)

Comparative note

  • Krita: robust Multi-Brush & Assistant tool for symmetry.
  • Photoshop: symmetry guides (vertical, radial).
  • Corel Painter: mirror & kaleidoscope painting tools.

Hands-on practice

Radial rosette

With radial 8 arms, draw one petal; the tool repeats it around the circle. Vary pressure to taper tips for a natural feel.

<!-- Steps (escaped) -->
1) Enable Radial (8 arms)
2) Draw a single petal shape
3) Add center dots and secondary petals
4) Save as brush-tip or pattern tile

Kaleidoscope tile

Create a small 512×512 tile with kaleidoscope. Test for seams by offsetting the canvas and repainting joins if needed.

<!-- Tiling checklist -->
Canvas: 512 × 512
Mode: Kaleidoscope (6–12 facets)
Test: Offset canvas (by half) to reveal seams
Fix: Paint across edges, re-test

Pattern on pottery

Place your motif onto a vase via a warp/mesh transform (gentle). Use Multiply/Overlay layers to integrate lighting so it sits on the form, not as a sticker.

<!-- Placement recipe -->
1) Paste motif on new layer
2) Transform to match curvature
3) Shadows on Multiply clipped layer
4) Highlights on Overlay clipped layer

Arms Center Sorry, your browser does not support inline SVG.
More arms = denser motif; start low, add complexity as needed.

Interactive — kaleidoscope canvas

Draw anywhere; strokes repeat around the center. Adjust arms, offset, and mirror-on-each-arm for a kaleidoscope effect.
