Paintstorm Studio — Dynamic Brushes

🎨 Paintstorm ⚙️ Dynamics 🧪 Intermediate

Make your brushes react to you — pressure for size, tilt for angle, speed for scatter/texture. Like a calligrapher’s pen that sings when you move with intention.

Goal: Configure expressive brush dynamics and organize presets so you can switch feels in one click.

How dynamics shape expression

Brush dynamics connect your hand to the digital bristles. Imagine your stylus as a violin bow — pressure is force, tilt is timbre, and speed is tempo.

Hands-on practice

Expressive line brush

Create a brush that sings with pressure and tilt. Use a small tip with a long taper and light texture.

<!-- Settings (escaped) -->
Brush Tip: Round (soft)
Spacing: 5–8%
Dynamics:
  - Size: Pressure (ease-in curve)
  - Opacity: Pressure (linear)
  - Angle: Tilt
Texture: Paper Fine (Depth 20%)
Stabilizer: Low–Medium

Textured painter

Use speed to vary scatter so quick strokes feel dry and lively, slow strokes lay smooth paint.

<!-- Settings (escaped) -->
Brush Tip: Custom oval
Dynamics:
  - Scatter: Speed (low)
  - Flow: Pressure (mid)
  - Rotation: Tilt
Texture: Canvas Medium (Depth 30%, Scale 90%)
Blending: Low smudge

Preset hygiene

Save often, tag clearly, and keep a small “favorites” set for speed. Think of it like a chef’s knife roll — only the essential tools travel.

Interactive — dynamics canvas

Click-drag to draw. Move faster to increase scatter; press longer to grow stroke size over time (simulating pressure).
